Study and Research Facilities

A substantial part of NEH Summer Scholars’ time will be reserved for individual study, reading, and reflection outside classroom. This will give Summer Scholars the time necessary to intensely prepare for classroom discussion as well as pursue their own research projects connected with the Seminar’s overall theme.

The University of Chicago campus features some of the best research libraries to undertake Enlightenment studies in North America.

The Joseph Regenstein Library is home to over 4.5 million print volumes focusing on subjects in the humanities and social sciences, as well as business, divinity, and area studies. It also provides access to numerous databases and houses notable collections, such as a collection of eighteenth-century maps of central Europe. The Regenstein Library is within easy walking distance from the Neubauer Collegium (ca. 3mins).

Together with the Reading Room of the  Joe and Rika Mansueto Library, the Regenstein Library forms an ideal study environment for the Seminar.

Outside campus, Summer Scholars might also wish to visit Chicago’s renowned Newberry Library, an independent research facility with special focus on the humanities and numerous collections of interest to scholars of the Enlightenment.

Access

NEH Summer Scholars will have access to the University of Chicago collections through the duration of the seminar; they will also be provided internet access through the University of Chicago wifi network.
