Michael Sørensen

Professor of Statistics, The University of Copenhagen

Michael Sørensen obtained his PhD in statistics from University of Aarhus in 1986, and since 1997 he has been professor of mathematical statistics at the University of Copenhagen. Previously he taught at the University of Aarhus. He has been a visiting professor at the Humboldt-University of Berlin, University of Chicago and Osaka University.

Michael Sørensen is a member of The Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters and is an elected Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics and an elected member of  International Statistical Institute. He was the scientific coordinator of the EU research training network Statistical Methods for Dynamical Stochastic Models (2000 – 2004), and was the principal investigator of the Copenhagen University Excellence Programme project Statistical Methods for Complex and High Dimensional Models (2008 – 2013).
He has served the Bernoulli Society in several capacities: Chairman of the European Regional Committee (2000 – 2002), Chairman of the Publications Committee (2008 – 2012), Chairman of the scientific program committee of the 29th European Meeting of Statisticians, and Council member (2013 – 2017).

Michael Sørensen’s main research interests include statistical inference for stochastic processes, in particular discrete time sampling of continuous time processes. He has published more than 75 papers in peer reviewed publications, co-edited two books and published a book (jointly with Uwe Küchler) on “Exponential Families of Stochastic Processes” (Springer, 1997). He serves or has served on the editorial board of several scientific journals and book series, including Stochastic Processes and their Applications, Scandinavian Journal of Statistics, Latin American Journal of Probability and Mathematical Statistics, and Journal of the Institute of Statistical Mathematics. He is chairman of the Governing Board of the Scandinavian Journal of Statistics.
