Field Trip 3: William Kentridge at Marian Goodman Paris

We made our third “field trip” yesterday to visit Marian Goodman Paris for an in-depth look at the William Kentridge exhibition currently installed there. During my own first visit last week, I was preoccupied with the installation in the sous-sol, O Sentimental Machine–Kentridge’s often-comic meditation on Trotky’s exile in Istanbul, the history of Soviet cinema and art, and the ironies of engineering humans as machines and programming machines to be human. On my second trip with the students, I was more haunted by the pen and ink works upstairs, the historical portraits, of course, but most especially the re-workings of Manet’s late series of flowers in crystal vases. Thanks to Johanna Wistrøm for her hospitality and generous discussion with the students.
