Field Trip 5: Jeu de Paume

I can’t believe that we are at the end of the third and last week! Our last field trip was a visit yesterday to the Jeu de Paume to see the exhibitions on Eli Lotar and Peter Campus. Most of us also saw a new work by Ali Cherri, Somniculus, in the Jeu de Paume satellite space. We had a informative and accommodating guide, and it was very interesting to view work ranging from the modernist photography of Eli Lotar to the early video work of Peter Campus, and then very new work by Campus and Cherri. Everyone especially enjoyed Campus’s interactive video installations, with their play on real-time video with loops and delays. In this historical context, the question was raised–what makes contemporary art contemporary, and how and when does it differ from modern art?
