In this session we will be listening to and learning about bhajan (भजन) and kirtan (किर्तन), two types of devotional song in northern India. In particular we will look at the songs of two prominent nirguṇ sants (निर्गुण संत) poets, Kabir and Ravidas.
Vocabulary

The three pads (पद) that we will read for this session are all attributed to Kabir (15th-16th centuries).
जरा धीरे हांको मेरे राम गाड़ी वाले : This pad is performed by Prahlad Singh Tipaniya of Malwa. The so-called sadhukkaṛī bhāṣā (सधुक्कड़ी भाषा) of Kabir reflects the linguistic influences of multiple regions. Note how Prahlad Singh begins by singing two versions of a dohā with which you are already familiar:
He then begins to sing the pad, beginning with the refrain or ṭek (टेक):
रंग महल में : This pad is also performed by Prahlad Singh Tipaniya. He begins with several dohās. Note how the performer adds vocatives and other words to the so-called ‘text’. I have left these out where possible below to maintain the meter of the dohās but in some cases it has made greater sense to leave them as they are:
Finally Prahlad Singh begins the pad:
रहना नहीं देस : The third composition by Kabir is performed by Jagjit Singh (d. 2011), the ghazal and playback singer. This was recorded in a studio rather than in a live performance; in the recording Singh immediately begins with the refrain-
In addition to the lyrics themselves, read Vishvanath Tripathi’s short biographical description of Kabir in Hindī Sāhitya Kā Itihās
