Guidelines and Suggestions:
1. Scope of Ideas: While the suggestions provided are meant to kickstart your brainstorming process, they’re not exhaustive. Embrace your creativity and propose unique ideas. (You’re welcome to be more innovative and bold than I am!) However, consider the project’s timeframe – about four weeks.
2. Project Milestones: Even if by Week 9 you’ve only reached preliminary conclusions or have pilot results, that’s perfectly acceptable. The key is to ensure you have something concrete, substantial, and meaningful to present for the class and to write your project report.
3. Collaboration and Respect: Every team member is valued, and everyone’s opinion holds equal weight. Listen, share, and collaborate with an open mind.
4. Technical Implementation: For your project, employ at least one LLM platform. Delve into the intricacies of your model’s application and, in particular, the evaluation metrics you’ve chosen when presenting and reporting.
5.Timeline:
Week 4: Group formations should be complete.
Week 6 (latest): Submit project topics and brief summaries. Earlier submissions are encouraged.
6. Use of ChatGPT or other LLMs: While leveraging tools like ChatGPT is permitted and encouraged, they should enhance, not replace, your work. If utilized, credit its contribution in your presentation and report, discussing its advantages and potential limitations (as these are part of the goal of the course).
Potential Project Ideas:
1. Class Experiments: Dive deeper or adjust one of our class’s experiments.
2. Image Prompts Evaluation: Assess image prompts from Yang et al.’s (2023) “The Dawn of LMMs: Preliminary Explorations with GPT-4V(ision)”. Propose a metric and method for image-text prompt evaluation.
3. Societal Impacts of LLMs: Examine the ethical, cultural, economic, legal, or political implications of LLMs. Explore topics such as bias, economic disparities, harmfulness, red team, or misinformation.
4. Start-up Ideas with ChatGPT: Harness ChatGPT to ideate a business or an LLM-centric startup.
5. Scientific and Intellectual Ventures: Use ChatGPT to tackle scientific queries or intellectual puzzles, from mathematical challenges to AI’s potential global dominance.
6. Creativity and ChatGPT: Delve into how ChatGPT can augment creative writing, art, or music.
7. Philosophical Musings: Reflect on the philosophical dimensions of ChatGPT (with implementations of course).
8. Experiment from the Class: Engage ChatGPT to delve more deeply into a class experiment.
9. Literature Review: Deploy ChatGPT to survey and assess scientific literature in a field of your choice.
10. Machine Translation & Linguistic Diversity: Explore and evaluate monolingual vs. multilingual processing in ChatGPT or other LLMs. If incorporating foreign languages, ensure content is accessible to the class and to me.
For Coding Enthusiasts:
1. Coding Assistance with ChatGPT: Leverage ChatGPT to do some coding for a specific task you choose (for example, develop your own code to tweak word embeddings).
2. Code Implementation: Use ChatGPT to aid in coding for a scientific query or an intellectual puzzle you wish to explore.
Remember, collaboration and open-mindedness are the pillars of a successful group project. Happy brainstorming!
