Dr. Emma Brett joined the faculty as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience at the University of Chicago in 2024. She earned her PhD in Clinical Psychology with a focus in Health Psychology from Oklahoma State University in 2019. Broadly, Dr. Brett is interested in factors that influence addictive behaviors with a focus on cancer prevention and nicotine/tobacco products. She is particularly interested in enhancing the accessibility and effectiveness of behavioral and pharmacological interventions in priority populations, including those with lower income, co-morbid psychiatric diagnoses, and minoritized groups. She has received a NIDA K99/R00 award to develop a mHealth vaping and dual vaping+smoking cessation intervention in young adults. As a licensed clinician, Dr. Brett works with individuals with substance use disorders, behavioral health concerns, and difficulties with anxiety, mood, and emotion regulation. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends outdoors, going to concerts, reading, and cheering on the Chicago Bulls.

Sophie Miller, B.S.

Project Coordinator

Sophie earned a Bachelor of Science in Biopsychology, Cognition, and Neuroscience from the University of Michigan in 2023. She is interested in research exploring the potential of repurposing and combining various drugs to improve outcomes for treatment-resistant depression. Outside of research, she enjoys going to concerts, exploring the city, and petting as many dogs around Chicago as possible.

Sarah Thein

Undergraduate Research Assistant

Sarah is a fourth-year double majoring in Psychology and Comparative Human Development on the Global Health Scholars track. She is interested in mental health and social development and plans to attend graduate school. She is interested in social and environmental factors that influence addiction, particularly the co-occurence of mental disorders and addiction. She is also interested in exploring current methods of treatment and prevention for substance abuse. Sarah serves as the President of Lean on Me, a student organization dedicated to destigmatizing mental health and providing emotional support to UChicago’s community as an anonymous and confidential peer support text hotline.
