Charles Abelmann is the former director of the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools. Previously, he served as head of the Barrie School in Silver Spring, MD, an independent K-12 school. At Barrie, Dr. Abelmann strengthened academic programs by promoting pedagogical innovation and integrating coordination among divisions. He developed teaching fellows and internship programs, and formed partnerships that attracted guest artists and visiting teachers from across the United States and abroad. Prior to beginning his work at the Lab Schools and at Barrie, Dr. Abelmann served in a variety of roles for the World Bank, including the overseeing of investments in education programs in Indonesia, China, and Mongolia. He conducted policy analysis and aided in capacity-building in ministries of education across East Asia, Latin America, the Baltic States, and sub-Saharan Africa. Earlier in his career, Dr. Abelmann served as a special assistant to the superintendent of the District of Columbia Public Schools.
