LUCERO is the Latinx Cancer Control Task Force established in 2019 and rebranded in 2021, under the University of Chicago Medicine Comprehensive Cancer Center Office of Community Engagement and Cancer Health Equity (OCECHE) to assess the cancer burden and social determinants of health needs among Latinx communities within the University of Chicago’s catchment area.
OUR VISION
LUCERO is a multidisciplinary, bi-cultural group dedicated to advocacy, increasing cancer awareness, and engaging the Latino community in cancer prevention, treatment, surveillance and health research.
OUR MISSION
LUCERO aims to reduce the cancer burden and address social determinants of health among Latinx communities in Chicago and surrounding areas by providing bilingual education and linkages to care to minimize disparities in cancer-related outcomes in this at-risk population.

OUR OBJECTIVES
Education
Partner with community stakeholders to disseminate bilingual cancer-specific information and raise awareness of cancer prevention and care.

Create opportunities with community organizations, providers, policy makers, advocates and community leaders to increase knowledge and awareness of cancer issues affecting Latinos.

Promote novel cancer population science discoveries through community-engaged research, and translate the knowledge into clinical and public health practice by disseminating cancer control outreach activities through collaborative efforts in our local community.
