Therapy4thePeople

Research shows that one in five individuals in the U.S. has a mental health disorder, yet less than half of them receive any care.

Therapy4thePeople aims to change that.

In March 2020, a pandemic effectively shut down the United States, and shortly after, the murder of George Floyd sparked nationwide protests that highlighted centuries of injustice and oppression towards people of color. Rates of mental health concerns skyrocketed, and yet many were unable to find or afford quality, culturally sensitive mental health care. In June of 2020, Dr. Ashley Castro, Bridget Makol, and Dani Adams decided to develop a solution that would begin to equalize the playing field. Our vision is a platform where people can easily find affordable mental health support and learn strategies to navigate the complex mental health system. We formed Therapy4thePeople — because we all need support from time to time, and money shouldn’t get in the way.

Our mission at Therapy4thePeople (Therapy4thePeople.org) is to reduce three major barriers that individuals experience when seeking mental health services: 1) high costs, 2) difficulty navigating the mental health system, and 3) difficulty finding appropriate service providers. We prioritize the needs of racial/ethnic minority and economically marginalized individuals, two groups facing major mental health disparities in the United States. Our main initiative involves building and disseminating the nation’s first comprehensive directory of diverse and affordable (i.e., free or below $30 per session) mental health services. This directory helps individuals locate services appropriate for their circumstances and stage of help-seeking. We also serve the public by disseminating strategies for accessing affordable and culturally sensitive care through our blog, via Twitter, and Instagram.
