Equal Opportunity Programs News & Announcements
The University is fundamentally committed to values that promote the full participation of all members of our community. The University has created the Office for Sexual Misconduct Support and Resources, the Office for Access and Equity, the Office for Affirmative Action, and the Office for Military-Affiliated Communities to coordinate equal opportunity program efforts, and provide consultation, support and resources to the University community. This page will feature news of University initiatives.
2018-2019
Office for Sexual Misconduct Prevention and Support
- Launched the Bringing in the Bystander program, which is a community responsibility approach to safely intervening in situations that involve, or are at risk for, sexual violence (link to attached email)
- Produced educational videos on Individuals with Title IX Reporting Responsibilities, Bystander intervention, University Policy, Consent, and Reporting
- Participated in the AAU Campus Climate Survey on Sexual Misconduct Prevalence
- Awarded the 2019 EVERFI Impact Award for excellence in sexual assault prevention programming
Office for Access and Equity
- Launched Access UChicago Now in partnership with Student Disability Services and Employee and Labor Relations
- Established the Office of the Provost’s Accessibility Student Advisory Board
- Published a guide to the reasonable accommodation process
- Created a resource guide and checklist for hosting accessible events
Office for Affirmative Action
- Created customized in-person compliance trainings for divisions and schools, and collaborated with the Office of the Provost on University-wide applicant tracking system training
- Hosted the Ivy Plus Equal Employment Opportunity meeting of peer institutions to share experiences, insights, and best practices.
- Expanded University outreach to individuals with disabilities and veterans
Office for Military-Affiliated Communities
- Launched the Office for Military-Affiliated Communities website
- Reestablished UChicago’s Student Veterans of America (SVA) chapter
- Partnered with Athletics to provide Ratner pool access to Team River Runner, an organization that trains wounded and disabled veterans in adaptive kayaking
- Expanded veteran programming and recognition events, including a new annual Memorial Day remembrance event
2017-2018
- Reorganized Equal Opportunity Programs into four distinct offices to increase visibility, efficiency, and effectiveness:
- Established the Office of the Provost’s Campus Partner Task Force on Sexual Misconduct and Campus-wide Prevention Advisory Committee
- Created the Support Person Initiative
- Developed new educational materials created including pregnant and parenting student information and respondent student resources
- Created the Annual Reporting website, which includes Clery reports, Illinois Preventing Sexual Violence in Higher Education Act reporting, and Campus and Student Life annual data
2016-2017
- Created the Deputy Title IX Coordinator for Students/Associate Dean of Students in the University position
- Created the Assistant Director position for Equal Opportunity Programs
- Implemented mandatory sexual misconduct awareness and prevention training for all members of the University community
- Established the Office of the Provost’s Student Advisory Board on Sexual Misconduct
- Created new educational materials created including Title IX Fact Sheet for Students, Responsible Employee Response Guide, and guide to University Resources and Confidentiality Options
- Updated No Contact Directive information updated for transparency in processes
2015-2016
- Launched the UMatter website providing the ability to report information anonymously and/or electronically
2014-2015
- Completed the Campus Climate Assessment
