The Silver Umbrella Offers Oak Street Designer Clothing at Consignment Prices

When the sisters Zakiyyah and Shaakira Muhammad opened their Hyde Park store, The Silver Umbrella, in 2014, their goal was to create a brick and mortar version of their successful online eBay store. The two grew up in Beverly, where Shaakira still lives, and Zakiyyah lives in South Shore – so the store’s location at 5305 S. Hyde Park Boulevard in the Del Prado building was ideal for them. The light-filled boutique beckons you with expertly curated displays of new and pre-loved designer apparel, footwear, handbags, jewelry, as well as art, home goods, and books.

And it’s not a coincidence that the sisters are design savvy – Zakiyyah previously managed the well-known Chicago fashion designer Cynthia Rowley’s Lincoln Park store location, with the perk of attending her New York Fashion Week shows and events. Shaakira designs a line of pillows made from African fabric patterns displayed in the store from her brand elevenseventysix, also on Etsy.

Over the past five years, The Silver Umbrella has built a loyal following of customers who both shop at the store as well as provide new inventory through the boutique’s consignment service. Most of their consignors are from Hyde Park, but they also work with people from Beverly and the downtown area. And when your items are selected to be sold, they are on display both in the store as well as online, increasing your chance of a sale. Zakiyyah explains, “A lot of people have clothing, shoes, and accessories that are just too valuable to give away, but it can be difficult to sell online if it’s not something you do every day. At the Silver Umbrella, we make the process much easier – we research and photograph the item, measure it, write a description, and even ship world-wide.”

On a typical transaction, the owner receives 40% of the item’s selling price. For luxury brands with a resale price of $600+, owners receive 55% of the selling price. The Silver Umbrella currently has a special promotion through October 31 in which owners of high-end handbags (from designers including Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Prada, Celine, Ferragamo, Chanel, and others) receive 60% of the selling price. Consignment consultation can be done in person, over the phone, or via email.

When you browse the racks at The Silver Umbrella, stocked with items from Tory Burch, Kate Spade, Vera Wang, Marc Jacobs, Missoni, Prada, Christian Dior, Miu Miu, Dolce & Gabbana, and many more – it’s clear this is not a thrift shop, though the prices are definitely wallet-friendly. Everything is in “like new” condition, and some items still have their original tags from Neiman Marcus, and other high-end stores.

In addition to selling in the store and online, The Silver Umbrella also does pop-up fashion events, with brands such as Couture Planet, a women-owned business in Lynn, Massachusetts with handbags and accessories made from 100% post-consumer newspaper, bearing headlines from the world of fashion, art, food, travel, sports, and much more.

If you’d like to consign your clothing, shoes, or accessories; are looking for a gift; or need something special for yourself; be sure to visit The Silver Umbrella Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., or Sunday from 12-5 p.m.
