Jade Court Ribbon Cutting/First Anniversary Event Scheduled for Saturday, November 20

Carol Cheung, owner of Harper Court’s Jade Court , is finally able to plan the ribbon-cutting and grand opening she envisioned when she relaunched her family’s beloved Chinese restaurant in November 2020 at 1516 E. Harper Court – and now there’s a new milestone to celebrate – Jade Court’s first anniversary.

To kick off the festivities on Saturday, November 20, Cheung has invited the Seven Star Lion Dance Group to perform a traditional Chinese dragon dance starting at 12 p.m. The group will dance around the block starting at S. Lake Park Avenue, turning west on 53rd Street, and north on Harper Avenue before arriving at the restaurant in Harper Court next to Hyatt Place.

The Hyde Park Chamber of Commerce will host the official ribbon cutting ceremony immediately following the dance performance, including local business owners, community members, the Hyde Park Herald, and a representative from 4th Ward Alderman Sophia King’s office.

There will be cocktails, appetizers, and cake from Brown Sugar Bakery, as well as a Peking duck carving with samples.

Cheung operated the critically acclaimed original Jade Court location near the University of Illinois at Chicago with her father, noted restaurateur Eddy Cheung, from 2016 until his death in June 2019. She knew she wanted to reopen the restaurant, and Hyde Park was a great fit with its growing dining scene.

She commented, “Our customers are so important to us, and we can’t wait to share this special day together with the community.”
