Currie opened her first store location in Lincoln Park at 1152 W. Diversey Parkway in 2018. In a fun coincidence, she was a vendor in one of Gilda Norris’ Hyde Park Flea events in Harper Court in 2018, and her booth was located in front of what would become her new store.

In an August 2021 article in Great Lakes By Design, “Currie…noted that she would like to open another location for the store on the South Side of Chicago.”

“I always wanted to have a business presence on the South Side, and it feels great to achieve this goal,” noted Currie. “There’s so much going on in Hyde Park, and I can’t wait for Recycled Modern to become a destination for furniture, vintage and handcrafted home décor, art, and unique lifestyle goods.”

Recycled Modern was selected as a recent participant in the University of Chicago’s Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation’s Small Business Growth Program. The program is focused on helping small business owners grow and scale their businesses to the next level of success. Currie completed the 10-week program in March 2022.

The store has been featured on NBC5 Chicago Today, WGN Chicago, and in Apartment Therapy, Dwell, and TimeOut Chicago.

Recycled Modern elevates the voices and stories of local artists from diverse backgrounds while featuring furniture, vintage and handcrafted home décor, art, and lifestyle goods with a focus on Black creatives.

Customers will find a gallery-like experience that highlights unique furniture, handcrafted home goods, and a wide variety of art.
