Understanding Chronic Pain
Chronic pain is pain that lasts for at least 3 months. The pain may be sharp or dull, causing burning or aching. Chronic pain can occur in any part of your body. Some people develop chronic pain after an injury. Others experience pain without any prior injuries. Chronic pain treatments aim to lessen the experience of pain and improve functioning and can include a broad range of treatment options including self-management strategies, referrals to specialists, topical medications and oral medications. Adults over 65 years of age suffer disproportionately from chronic pain and adverse events from opioids.
