Joao Granja

Professor of Accounting

In my research, I explore how regulatory and supervisory policies affect financial stability and economic outcomes with a specific emphasis on understanding the role that accounting rules and disclosure choices in the banking sector play in shaping these outcomes. My papers have been accepted in prestigious academic journals such as the Review of Financial Studies, Journal of Finance, Journal of Accounting Research, Journal of Financial Economics, and Journal of Accounting and Economics and my research has been covered in major mainstream newspapers such as the New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, and Bloomberg News.

I earned an undergraduate degree in economics from the Universidade do Porto (Portugal) and a Master’s degree in economics from the Universidade Católica Portuguesa (Lisbon). Prior to joining academia, I consulted on several projects that involved the use of financial statements to evaluate the efficiency of regulated industries in Portugal. I completed a PhD in accounting from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business in 2013 and before joining Booth in 2016, I worked as an assistant professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Business.
