Join us today as we host Prof. Saul Olyan, Samuel Ungerleider Jr. Professor of Judaic Studies and Professor of Religious Studies at Brown University who will be presenting on “Family Religion in Israel and the Wider Levant of First Millennium B.C.

Special Event – David Sax on Save The Deli

Join us on Monday Nov. 8th as we host Los Angeles Times Best Selling Author David Sax as he presents on his James Beard Award winning book: Save The Deli: In Search of Perfect Pastrami, Crusty Rye, and the Heart of Jewish Delicatessen.

The event is to be catered by Manny’s Deli, so come on out and enjoy the fruits of the Jewish Studies and the Hebrew Bible Workshop and the History of Judaism Area Club.

After a brief respite we continue again, this time with Anne Knafl, PhD Candidate in Hebrew Bible at the Divinity School, University of Chicago, who will be presenting a chapter of her dissertation entitled “Divine Anthropomorphism and the Theophanies at Bethel (Gen 28:10-22; 35:1-15).

Schedule for Autumn ’10

Welcome back to a new and exciting year in the Jewish Studies and the Hebrew Bible Workshop.  Below is our schedule thus far for the Autumn quarter of ’10.

Oct. 11 – Ben Thomas, PhD Candidate in NELC at the University of Chicago, presenting on “A Story of Silence: Deuteronomism and the Prophecy of Jonah in the Book of Kings.”

Oct. 18 – Prof. Saul Olyan, Samuel Ungerleider Jr. Professor of Judaic Studies and Professor of Religious Studies at Brown University will be presenting on “Family Religion in Israel and the Wider Levant of First Millennium B.C.” – Event CANCELED

Final event of the Academic year!

For the final event of the academic year Jacqueline E. Papour, PhD student in NELC at the University of Chicago, will be presenting on “Teaching and Family in Proverbs 31:10-31.”

A handout with translations is available for download by clicking HERE.

The event will be on TUESDAY June 1st at 6pm in Swift hall rm 200.

Below are the dates and topics for the remaining workshops of the academic year.  I thank you all for your participation over the past year and look forward to your continued presence in our forum.

May 17th – Prof. Thomas Romer, Professor of Hebrew Bible in the Faculty of Theology at the University of Lausanne and in the College de France, on “Some (Partially) Censored Traditions About Moses Outside the Hebrew Bible.”

May 24th – Prof. Adam Lipszyc, of the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the Polish Academy of Sciences, on “Silence inscribed: Derrida reading Rosenzweig, while reading Kierkegaard.”

June 1st (Tuesday) – Jacqueline Eliza Papour, PhD Student in NELC at the University of Chicago, on “Proverbs 31.”
