The Center for East Asian Studies at the University of Chicago is delighted to announce that it will once again be holding its summer Reading Kuzushiji Workshop. This year the workshop will meet daily from June 5th to 9th 2023 from 9 to 4 pm. There will be two sections. The introductory section will be led by Dr. Nobuko Toyosawa, Research Fellow at Oriental Institute, Czech Academy of Sciences. Dr. Toyosawa is the author of Imaginative Mapping: Japanese Identity in the Tokugawa and Meiji Eras (Cambridge: Harvard University Asia Center, 2019). The intermediate section will be led by Dr. Yoshitaka Yamamoto of the National Institute of Japanese Literature. Dr. Yamamoto is the author of Shibun to keisei: Bakufu jushin no jūhasseki 詩文と径世:幕府儒臣の十八世紀 (Nagoya: University of Nagoya Press, 2021).
There is no cost for the workshop except for a program fee of $100 that covers a catered lunch daily, snacks, beverages, and copies of workshop materials. We offer limited financial aid for students and junior faculty traveling from institutions that cannot support their participation.
The workshop is open to advanced undergraduates, graduate students, faculty, and independent scholars. The workshop will be conducted in Japanese.
The workshop venue is in the Center for East Asian Studies Room 319, 1155 E. 60th St, Chicago, IL 60637.
