We hope that using the Logeion app on your iPhone or iPad is intuitive, and that you’ll get the hang of it quickly, all by yourself, but here are the basics, and some answers to frequently asked questions.
To look up a word, tap Search at the top left, if you do not already see a search box as below:
You will immediately notice a change from earlier versions: you can now search for both Greek and Latin at the same time (typing g a r will bring up words starting in gar or γαρ), or choose one or the other. You can still elect to look up Greek with a Greek keyboard, as well.
As always, Logeion will start giving suggestions after you enter the third character. Tap one of the suggestions, and you will see an entry.
FAQ: But what if I want to look up a two-letter entry? Hit return on your keyboard and you’ll see, for instance, all the possibilities for words starting in an. These show up in order of their length!
Looking at an entry: Here is the entry for λόγος, in a screenshot from my laptop for a change. Tap the headers to see the content of different dictionaries. The presence of a frequency rank shows you that you should make λόγος a priority in learning Greek.. Information that normally appears in the Sidebar on the web is shown under the header Corpus Data following the dictionaries.
Almost there: you can look up words within entries by selecting them and sweeping all the way to the right in the menu that appears (Copy, Look up, Translate………LOGEION!)
Occasionally, you’ll run into the fact that we have more resources on the website than in the app. You will be prompted to visit the website with the Logeion Web link, but you can also do so to consult the About page, the Abbreviations from various dictionaries, etc.
Do you want a different size font or switch to Dark Mode? Use your device’s Settings for Display & Brightness to switch from light to dark. Adjust Text Size as you prefer.
If this write up doesn’t answer your questions, please tap the ? at the top right of the search screen and select Report a Problem. This will send you to a Google form to fill out, which gives me an alert, and I’ll try to answer as best I can. You can use the same form to report errors in the data!
doesn’t work on Iphone to toggle between languages
This is describing the new version, currently in testing. It will come out soon! Apple requires ‘User Support’ so I needed to create this blog post, and the app will link to it.
This app is absolutely wonderful. And the new functionality only makes it twice as good. I recommend Logeion and Attikos to others but I’d also like to support this work with my two mites. Is there a place to donate?
Truly not more than two mites, btw. I’m not wealthy, but plz let me know!
First of all, thank you for the kind words!! Telling (and showing) your friends is already great, as is reporting any problems you find (bugs, data entry errors, etc.) or opportunities (an open-access dictionary we can add? let us know!). But if you’d like to donate, you can use the link on the Classics department website (classics.uchicago.edu) and mention Logeion in the special instructions. Do let me know because I would like to go after it to track that:-) Not sure the central admin knows about Logeion.. Alternatively, you can mail a check made out to the College with Logeion on the memo line. Send to Helma Dik, Dept. of Classics, 1010 E. 59th Street, Chicago IL 60637. A final option I would also very much endorse is to send a gift card to a programmer – but you’d have to get in touch with me for details..
