Outreach

White Wanderer

In 2017, I met two artists, Petra and Sean, who are part of the Luftwerk Artists Consortium located here in Chicago. They were doing a public space art project featuring the rift that broke a large tabular iceberg off the Larsen C Ice Shelf earlier that year. As part of their project, they took some of my seismic data of iceberg tremor observed on iceberg B15 back in 2005 and created a form of music. This music was broadcast in the art space and produced a very interesting experience. Eventually, the music was named a “top 10” creation by the New Yorker Magazine.  Here are some photographs and links to this outreach activity (which was kindly supported by the US seismometer consortium, PASSCAL).

The White Wanderer Logo was taken to be the plan view geometry of the Larsen C Ice Shelf rift.

We set up a seismometer (kindly provided by PASSCAL) on the site to show interested people how the data was collected that ultimately helped to generate the music.

The White Wanderer was also shown at the Navy Pier Expo. This exhibition included a light sculpture that was designed from mirrors and lights to evoke the feeling of sea ice in sunlight.

White Wanderer Requium

In 2020, just before the pandemic started, my artist collaborators worked with a musical composer Katherine Young, now a professor of music at Emory University, to create a weekend feature held at the Pritzker Pavilion in Chicago’s Millennium Park. Details can be seen here. The music can be heard here.
