Tolleston Trail 011422

The Tolleston Dunes trail has maintained a good diversity of fungi and lichens into winter.  We’ve had some snow, but not yet enough to bury everything, just enough to add some visual contrast.

These leaves are hanging in there nicely.

All along the trail the varied greens of the lichens on the logs and oranges of the fallen leaves popped out visually from the background snow. Whereas this piece of wood would hardly stand out amid the vibrancy of summer, in winter it really shines.

This log, covered in orange fungi, was visually incredible.

The triangular arrangement of the blades of grass lined up so well with the pattern of bracket fungi on the log that it is hard to believe it was not staged. It is just one of those things which catches the eye as you view a scene from different angles and perspectives.

The bottom half of this long fallen tree trunk was uniformly covered with this orange fungi.

On first glance I thought the little white fungi were small patches of snow.

An old weathered fence post. Much of the Indiana Dunes National Park is reclaimed farm and residential land. Occasionally you come across their remnants.

Last log before hitting the parking lot and heading home for the day.
