It is amazing what you see when you spend time just sitting in one place and looking. We went camping for the first time recently and spotted a Cicada husk on the underside of a plant stem. We didn’t think much of it initially, but when we checked again about an hour later we saw that the Cicada was in the process of molting.
There were a lot of these around our campsite at the Dunewood campground.
About an hour after first being spotted, we noticed the Cicada had emerged almost 3/4 of the way from the husk. Note how the delicate wings are all folded up on the side.
Maybe 30 minutes later it had completely emerged and the wings were mostly unfurled, though note the tiny bit of curvature remaining at the wingtips.
Finally the wings are fully formed. The next time we looked it had flown away.
