Almost Beach Weather

Thanksgiving week, late November.  This is the time of year I can begin to enjoy being at the beach.  It is getting cooler, nicely chilled breezes off the lake, the sun is low on the horizon even midafternoon.  Typically only a few other people around.  Everything is nice and quiet, nothing but the sounds of the waves on the beach and the wind whistling through the dunes.  So very peaceful and relaxing.

The central avenue beach pretty much anchors the far eastern edge of the Indiana Dunes National Park.  I visited it for the first time on a somewhat breezy and chilly day just before Thanksgiving.

There is a short walk from the parking lot to the beach, which opens up with a very nice view of the lake. The walk is just long enough that I would not want to be hauling a big cooler filled with ice and beverages.
Looking to the right you notice the beach itself is pretty narrow this year, and the steep foredunes come almost right up to the water. In the distance you can see one of Indiana’s power plants.
Standing at the base of the foredunes, looking up. Yeah, they are steep.
This photograph was taken about 2pm. But this time of year the sun is low in the sky and the tall foredunes produce some beautiful shadow effects and there is lots of great contrast in the scene. I was using an ultra-wide angle lens for this shot which lengthens the already long shadows, making them even more dramatic.
I really enjoyed the combination of the steep angles of the foredunes and the long sharp shadows.
