Why should you participate in the My Diabetes, My Community study?

Your participation will help improve our understanding of how we can provide the best diabetes care for older adults.  By participating, you are taking an active role in:

  • Helping others, including family members or friends with diabetes
  • Being a part of the cure; the information we learn will be used to inform strategies for the best way to provide care for older adults with diabetes
  • Testing new technologies and methods that might work better than those currently available
  • Gain access to the resources relevant for aging and diabetes
What is involved as a participant in the study?

Study participation in My Diabetes, My Community lasts about one year.  If you agree to participate, you will complete one study call per month (12 calls in total) with a member of the study team, and each call will take about 20 minutes. You will also take three surveys, one when you first sign up, one after 6 months, and one at the end of the study.  Each survey will take about 25 minutes to complete.  All the study visits will take place over the phone and from the comfort of your home.  

What are the general requirements for joining the study?

To be eligible to participate in the My Diabetes, My Community research study, the following requirements must be met:

  • Be 60 years old or older
  • Have type 2 diabetes
  • Receive medical care at at University of Chicago hospital or clinic
  • Live in the Chicago metropolitan area
  • Have access to a cell phone with internet access OR
  • Have access to a personal email address

When you contact us, you will be asked to complete a screening survey over the phone to determine your eligiblity for the study.

Do you provide compensation for participation?

Participants who are enrolled in the study will receive one $25 gift card for completing the first survey, one $50 gift card for the completing the second survey, and one $75 for completing the third survey, for a total of $150.
