All these programs should be available to all students, faculty and staff at the University of Chicago. To log into autodesk services, use your you@uchicago.edu credentials. Details are under the Software Licensing page accessible from the UChicago IT Services homepage. You have to register as an educational account and send a picture of your student / employee ID.
Fusion 360
Fusion 360 is a cloud based computer aided design (CAD) application available to students in certain classes. It works on Mac and Windows, the files are stored in the cloud. It’s a good program to use for small go medium sized projects.
Inventor
Autodesk Inventor is a full fledged CAD desktop application. It only works on Windows or on a computer using a Windows emulator (such as Parallels Desktop. It’s best for large projects with many and complex parts.
EAGLE
EAGLE is an electronics design automation (EDA) program. It works on Mac, Windows and Linux.
AutoCAD
AutoCAD is a CAD application which specializes on flat drawings. It runs on Windows and Mac and is perfect to use for architects, city planers and graphic designers. While it also allows to draw 3D objects it has more limited capabilities than Autodesk Inventor.
