The Mirmira lab, led by first author Batoul Hammoud, MD, published a new study in Endocrinology demonstrating the effects of polyamine depletion by DENSpm on mice. Unlike DFMO (see previous study), DENSpm had only modest effects on type 1 diabetes outcomes in NOD mice and led to increased mortality, potentially due to a toxic accumulation of reactive oxygen species.
