The “Exploring (Mixed) Methods in Social Sciences” study-group engages with methods both theoretically and practically, and its goals are tri-fold:
- To share and learn the language of different methods, and different disciplinary orientation to ‘methods,’ thinking beyond just the ‘qualitative vs. quantitative’ distinction.
- To explore the ‘question-method’ pathways and the ways in which one can successfully combine different methodological approaches in answering questions.
- To cultivate a space for the discussions of early-stage work and expose students to the processes of developing research projects.
As a study group, we have the freedom and the opportunity to explore different workshop formats, so we’re welcoming a variety of contributions, such as (but not limited to):
- “methods sections” of research or grant proposals that you would like to workshop (including specific instruments)
- articles or dissertations chapters that seek to bring together insights gained through the use of different methods
- presentations of interesting methodological approaches that you’d like to share with people or get feedback on
- articles or book chapters that you would like to read and discuss with others
- etc.
