From the Mughals to the Raj

Welcome

Benjamin West (1738–1820), Shah Alam conveying the Grant of the Diwani to Lord Clive, August 1765, c.1818, oil on canvas, 290 × 400 cm, British Library.

The aim of this workshop, From the Mughals to the Raj, is to host a select group of scholars invested in reopening central questions about the formation of the British empire in India by interrogating the notion that an autocratic and illiberal imperium as was eventually erected by the East India Company in India could have taken shape without serious debate, contestation, or politics. The workshop will be an opportunity for established and young scholars to share and receive constructive feedback on work in progress.

The Commmitee on Southern Asian Studies and the Nicholson Center are generously co-sponoring this workshop.
