Message from the Provost

Today’s new faculty members join the University of Chicago at a time of tremendous upheaval in education and life in general. In the face of a global pandemic, the University has continued to provide excellent instruction and facilitate field-defining research, while fostering its distinctive community of scholars and culture of intellectual discourse and rigorous inquiry. In their scholarship and ambition, our new faculty members reflect the best traditions of the University while bringing unique insights and approaches to our academic community.

The intellectual vibrancy of our University is fundamentally driven by the quality of the faculty we are able to recruit and retain. As we welcome our new faculty to the University our task is to provide an environment and culture where they can thrive, discover new insights and solutions, create new fields and areas of inquiry, and inspire generations of new students.

This year’s cohort has already proven its ability to uphold the University’s high standards in the face of unprecedented challenge, and we look forward to the impact its members will make as they continue their pursuit of deeper knowledge.
