Natalia Bermúdez

Natalia Bermúdez’s research interests include historical linguistics and language documentation and description. She has extensive experience documenting indigenous languages of Latin America, primarily Chibchan languages, especially Naso (Panamá). Her current research focuses on verbal art (linguistic forms that are interpreted as salient, e.g., ideophones, puns, poetic couplets) through an intersection of humanistic, grammatical, and social perspectives. She is also interested in the multilingual expressions and experiences of Latinx and queer identities.
Her work has been published in the Journal of Linguistic Anthropology and has been funded by the National Science Foundation.
She received her BA in linguistics and psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and her MA and PhD in linguistics from the University of Texas at Austin. Most recently, she was a Provost’s Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Chicago.
