Janelle R. Goodwill

Janelle R. Goodwill’s research centers the mental health experiences of Black Americans, with a particular focus on suicide and depression. In this work, she explores how such strengths as help-seeking, coping, and social support protect against adverse outcomes and ultimately promote well-being. Additionally, she considers how measurement and psychological scale construction influence the treatment of depression across race and gender groups. The overarching goal of her research is to identify the intra- and interpersonal factors that both prevent suicide and foster flourishing for youth, young adults, and beyond.
Her work has been published in Psychology of Men and Masculinities, Cultural Diversity & Ethnic Minority Psychology, Social Work, Journal of Affective Disorders, Archives of Suicide Research, and American Journal of Orthopsychiatry, among others. She has also contributed chapters to Men’s Health Equity: A Handbook (Routledge, 2019) and The SAGE Encyclopedia of Psychology and Gender (SAGE Publications, Inc., 2017). She is the recipient of a Ford Foundation Predoctoral Fellowship and an Active Minds Emerging Scholars Fellowship.
Goodwill earned her MSW, MS, and PhD in social work and psychology from the University of Michigan. She completed her BA in psychology at Michigan State University.
