Joseph McDonald specializes in pediatric rheumatology and provides care to children with arthritis and other autoimmune diseases affecting the joints, skin, muscles, and blood vessels. His clinical and research interests include studying quality of life outcomes in children with inflammatory eye disease and improving rheumatology care with the integration of musculoskeletal ultrasound.

At the University of Chicago Medicine, he will be starting a clinical program in diagnostic and interventional ultrasound for children with arthritis. His research has been published in Pediatric Rheumatology, The Rheumatologist, and Annals of Eye Science.

McDonald received his MD from the SUNY (State University of New York) Upstate Medical University in Syracuse. He completed his residency and fellowship training in pediatrics and pediatric rheumatology at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. He also earned a master’s degree in clinical and translational research from the University of Cincinnati and completed a yearlong training program in musculoskeletal ultrasound through the Ultrasound School of North American Rheumatologists.
