Maria Lucia Madariaga

Maria Lucia Madariaga is a thoracic surgeon whose main research interest is in using ex vivo organ perfusion systems as a platform to model disease and modify organs. This technique is useful for a wide variety of applications, such as the achievement of lung tolerance for transplantation, the study of the metabolism of lung cancer, and the development of therapeutics for respiratory diseases, including acute respiratory disease syndrome.
Her research has been published in The Annals of Thoracic Surgery, Journal of Thoracic Cardiovascular Surgery, European Journal of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery, Annals of Cardiothoracic Surgery, and American Journal of Transplantation. She has also contributed to book chapters published in Difficult Decisions in Thoracic Surgery: An Evidence-Based Approach (Springer, 2020) and Advances in Experimental Surgery (Nova Science Publishers, 2018).
Madariaga holds a BA in biochemistry from Harvard College and an MD from Harvard Medical School. She completed a general surgery residency and a cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital.
