Matthew Notowidigdo

Matthew Notowidigdo’s research covers topics in labor and health economics. He has investigated the causes and consequences of long-term unemployment and the effects of unemployment insurance, as well as the impacts of health insurance and adverse health events on financial well-being. More recently, he has studied various programs that make up the social safety net, including the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (food stamps), Medicaid, and the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program.
His findings have been published in the Journal of Labor Economics, American Economic Journal: Applied Economics, Economic Journal, and the American Economic Review. He is a co-editor of the American Economic Journal: Economic Policy, an associate editor at the Quarterly Journal of Economics, and a research associate in labor studies, health care, and public economics at the National Bureau of Economic Research.
Notowidigdo holds BS degrees in economics and computer science, an MEng in computer engineering, and a PhD in economics, all from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Previously, he was a Neubauer Family Assistant Professor of Economics at Chicago Booth and later served as an associate professor of economics at Northwestern University.
