Mercedes Castiel

Mercedes Castiel is a gynecologist with a specialized focus and expertise in cancer survivorship and previvorship. She has particular experience in cancer risk associated with hereditary breast-ovarian cancer syndromes linked to genetic mutations such as BRCA or a mutation associated with Lynch syndrome. She is also an expert on managing gynecologic issues in women with Fanconi anemia. Her research interests include investigating ways to maximize the quality of life of patients of all ages who have been treated for cancer. She is also certified in cancer risk genetics. In addition to her clinical practice and research, she is currently the director of Women’s Cancer Survivorship at the University of Chicago Medicine.
She serves on the North American Menopause Society’s Education Committee and on the American Society of Clinical Oncology’s Cancer Prevention Committee and Genetics Sub-Committee.
Castiel received a BSc in human biology and French language and literature, and later her MD, from the University of Toronto, and also completed her residency there. She was previously affiliated with the University of California, Los Angeles School of Medicine; Albert Einstein College of Medicine; Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center; Joan & Sanford I. Weill Medical College of Cornell University; and NYU School of Medicine.
