Raghavendra Mirmira’s research efforts are focused on the pathogenesis of diabetes mellitus and the biology of the islet. In addition, as director of the Department of Medicine’s Translational Research Center, he facilitates and oversees the recruitment and support of outstanding physician-scientists in strategic areas of priority, to further advance translational research. He is also actively involved in the University of Chicago Medicine Kovler Diabetes Center and the Diabetes Research and Training Center.

He has published over 130 scientific papers and is deputy editor-in-chief of the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism. He is an elected member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation.

After completing an AB in chemistry at the University of Chicago, Mirmira entered its Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP), earning an MD and a PhD in biochemistry and molecular biology. He completed his residency in internal medicine and subspecialty training in diabetes and endocrinology at the University of California, San Francisco. Most recently, he was affiliated with the Indiana University (IU) School of Medicine, where he was the Eli Lilly Endowed Chair and Professor of Pediatrics, Medicine, Cellular and Integrative Physiology, and Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. He also served as director of the IU School of Medicine’s training program for MSTP students, its Center for Diabetes and Metabolic Diseases, and the Herman B. Wells Center for Pediatric Research.
