Summer Hanson

Summer Hanson is a plastic and reconstructive surgeon. Her research interests include stem cell therapies, breast cancer and reconstruction, and facial surgery after head and neck cancer. She is also the director of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Research in the Department of Surgery.
Her research has been published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Cell Stem Cell, The Laryngoscope, Journal of Surgical Oncology, Tissue Engineering Part A, Aesthetic Surgery Journal, Journal of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine, and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery–Global Open.
Hanson received an MD from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, where she also held an integrated clinical residency in plastic and reconstructive surgery. She completed a research fellowship in reconstructive surgery at the University of Wisconsin Carbone Cancer Center. Previously she completed a BA summa cum laude in biology and chemistry from the University of St. Thomas, in St. Paul, and later earned an MS and PhD in biomedical engineering from the University of Wisconsin College of Engineering. Most recently, she was an associate professor in the Department of Plastic Surgery at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.
