Welcome to Oishi Lab!

Shige Oishi: Bio

My name is Shige Oishi (pronounce like “she-gay oh-e-she”), the Marshall Field IV Professor of Psychology at UChicago. I was born and raised in Japan. My parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, indeed all my ancestors as far as I know, lived in one small town. My parents still live there. I left my hometown exactly 20 days after I turned 18 and went to college in Tokyo.

After college, I went to Columbia University’s Teachers College to study counseling psychology. There, I realized that I was more interested in personality and social psychology than the clinical end of psychology, in particular, culture and well-being. So, I went to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) for my Ph.D. UIUC was an ideal place to study culture and well-being at that time (1995-2000). My advisor Ed Diener pioneered the scientific study of happiness. He was a wonderful scientist and human being! In addition, UIUC had Harry Triandis, the founder of cross-cultural psychology, and young Dov Cohen, a rising star of cultural psychology. I was able to work with the renowned experimental social psychologist, Bob Wyer, as well. The Diener lab at that time had star graduate students, Mark Suh (now a professor at Yonsei) and Rich Lucas (now the MSU foundation professor at Michigan State), as well as international visiting students (e.g., Uli Schimmak, now a professor at UToronto) and professors (e.g., Michael Eid, professor at Free University Berlin).

My first faculty position was at the University of Minnesota (2000-2004). I then moved to the University of Virginia (2004-2022). In July 2022, I moved to the University of Chicago. My main research interests center on culture, social ecology, and well-being.

I love baseball, basketball, and novels.
