Call Schedule
At UChicago Pediatrics, we prioritize a healthy work-life balance to support both personal well-being and professional development. Call responsibilities are limited to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). During PICU blocks, residents are assigned to take one call per 4-week block. There are no additional call responsibilities throughout the residency training program.
Benefits and Perks
Meals & Call Perks
We keep you fueled and safe. Enjoy daily meal stipends, free lunches, monthly breakfasts, and reimbursed rides home after call shifts.
Wellness and Support
Your well-being matters. In addition to GME-wide wellness resources, our Pediatrics APDs play an active role in supporting trainees. They lead tailored initiatives like wellness check-ins, resident retreats, and support programs designed specifically for the unique demands of pediatric training. Plus, you’ll have access to wellness funds, comprehensive benefits including health coverage, and a strong culture of support.
Pediatric Specific Perks
We invest in your growth. Pediatric trainees receive reimbursement for licensing, board prep and exam fees, plus annual professional development funds and strong departmental support for research, QI, and national conference presentations.
Call & Contact
Protected time. Real support. With a competitive salary structure, union-secured benefits, and policies that protect your hours, rest, and recovery, you can focus on learning and delivering excellent care. Residents benefit from structured call schedules, guaranteed post-call rest, and ride-home reimbursements for safety. Our union contract ensures transparency and advocacy around work hours, wellness, and professional development, so you’re never navigating training alone.
Leave Policies
Family-first, always. All trainees are eligible for six weeks of fully paid parental leave, regardless of birthing status, and inclusive of adoptive and foster parents. This leave is in addition to any paid medical leave, providing flexibility and support during major life transitions. The policy reflects our commitment to ensuring that trainees can care for their families without compromising their education, career momentum, or financial well-being.
Tuition Reimbursement
Education benefits for your whole family. Save 50% on Lab School tuition and University classes for dependents or your partner.
Extras
The little things go a long way. Fellows enjoy a 4% employer retirement match, monthly device/data stipends, and discounted memberships to campus gyms like Ratner and Henry Crown. You’ll also benefit from guaranteed parking, ensuring a smooth start (and end) to every shift. These practical perks are designed to reduce daily stress and support your life outside the hospital.
