Eduardo Perozo

Principal Investigator

Eduardo Perozo is Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Chicago. He obtained a Licenciado Degree in Biology at the Universidad Central de Venezuela (UCV) and his Ph.D in Physiology at the University of California, Los Angeles. He was a postdoctoral fellow in membrane biophysics at the Jules Stein Eye Institute and Dept. of Chemistry and Biochemistry, UCLA.  In 2006, he joined the faculty of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and became a member of the Institute for Biophysical Dynamics and the Neuroscience Institute. Eduardo was elected as a Fellow of the Biophysical Society in 2015 and in 2019 received the KS Cole Award for contributions to our understanding of ion channel structure and dynamics. In 2023, he was inducted to the Academia de Ciencias de America Latina (ACAL).

Jane Demchenko

Graduate Student

 Jane received a B.S. from the Moscow State University in Molecular Biology. Eagle to experience science in different settings and countries, Jane interned at the Janelia Research Institute and the Institute of Science and Technology (IST), in Austria. Jane decided to pursue her PhD at the University of Chicago in 2021, where she joined the Perozo Lab in 2022. She is currently studying the MET protein complex present in outer hair cells in zebrafish from both proteomics and functional perspectives. She is also developing her expertise in Cryo-ET through collaborative projects. Outside the bio world, you will probably find Jane running, cycling, snowboarding, or sharpening her film and photography skills.

Margaret Milewski

Lab Manager

Margaret received a MSc degree and a First-degree Specialization in Medical Analytics from the Medical University of Bialystok, Poland. She is the Perozo Lab manager and oversees the smooth operation of the lab. Margaret is involved in general laboratory management – including ordering supplies and chemicals, lab inventory, equipment maintenance, laboratory safety, overseeing the Tissue Culture room facility, designing working space for the new students and staff, and training them in basic wet lab skills. She also participates in ongoing projects in the lab involving general cell and molecular biology. Outside of the lab, Margaret enjoys the outdoors: hiking, biking, exploring National Parks, and gardening.

Naileth González

Post-Doctoral Fellow

Naileth received a bachelor’s degree in Biology from the Universidad Central de Venezuela, then ventured to Chile for more research opportunities to pursue her doctoral studies. She received a PhD in Sciences with a specialization in Neuroscience at the Universidad Valparaíso, where she worked with Dr. Ramón Latorre on the molecular mechanisms that regulate the calcium- and voltage-activated potassium channel (BK) using electrophysiology (Patch-Clamp in Xenopus oocytes). Naileth joined the Perozo Lab in 2023 as a postdoctoral. She is currently working with the team to explore the molecular mechanisms of mechanosensation in gut cells. In her spare time, Naileth likes reading (but not papers), going to the lake, and riding her bike.

Patrick Haller

Graduate Student

Patrick received a B.S. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of Miami, where he worked with Dr. Fulvia Verde in examining cell polarity and morphogenesis. Patrick is a Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics PhD candidate at the University of Chicago, and he joined the Perozo Lab in 2021. Patrick is interested in exploring the structure, function and dynamics of membrane proteins, and how it can be contrasted in different species. Outside the lab, you will find Patrick playing soccer, listening to music, or spending time outdoors and at Lake Michigan!

Yaikhomba Mutum

Post-Doctoral Fellow

Yaikhomba joined the lab in 2024 as a postdoctoral fellow. His PhD focused on utilizing electron microscopy to solve structures of protein complexes from native biological membranes. Currently, Yaikhomba is investigating the molecular mechanisms and function of the homologs of the mammalian mechano-transduction machinery from choanoflagellates – a protein complex responsible for hearing – from an evolutionary perspective. His goal is to provide a molecular mechanism of the machinery responsible for hearing.

Zeeshan Banday

Post-Doctoral Fellow

Zeeshan received a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and Biology, and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. During his Ph.D., he studied epigenetic regulation of immune memory formation in Arabidopsis. After earning his doctorate degree, Zeeshan briefly studied the role of glucose signaling in heat shock response. Zeeshan joined the University of Chicago in 2017 as a postdoctoral research fellow in Dr. Jean Greenberg’s group in the Department of Molecular Genetics and Cell Biology. There, he studied a proline-rich superfamily of chloroplast membrane proteins. Zeeshan joined the Perozo Lab in 2021, where he applies computational, genetic, cell, and molecular biology tools to study the MET complex in collaboration with the Malamy Lab from the department of Molecular Genetics and Cell Biology (MGCB). Far from the jellyfish, the scholar enjoys playing with his kids, going to the mountains, and horseback riding.
Research interests: Mechanosensitive ion channels; MET complex; Cnidarian; CRISPR; RNAi.

Segun Ogungbemi

Graduate Student

Segun received a Bachelor of Technology in Biochemistry from the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Nigeria, and a MSc in Biochemistry from the University of Delaware, where he worked on the characterization of human selenoproteins. He then worked as a Senior Research Associate at Corteva Agriscience before joining the Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics (BMB) graduate program at the University of Chicago in 2024. Segun joined the Perozo lab in 2025, with co-mentorship from the Concepcion lab. He is currently looking to explore the functional and structural dynamics of TMCs in T cells. Outside the lab, Segun enjoys listening to music and podcasts.

Camila Makhlouta

Graduate Student

Camila double majored in Neuroscience and Chemistry at Emory University in Atlanta, where she developed research categorizing a group of neurons in the paravertebral ganglia of the mouse. Upon graduation, Camila was a research technician at MGH (Harvard’s teaching hospital). There, she worked in Luke Chao’s lab studying membrane proteins in mitochondria. Camila is part of the University of Chicago’s Neurobiology doctorate program where she joined the Perozo Lab in 2023 to study the trafficking of the MET complex in hair cells. When not using a microscope, you will probably find Camila biking, playing soccer, and going to the beach.

Madi Guski

Graduate Student

Madi holds a B.S. in Biochemistry from Northeastern University, Boston. After she graduated, Madi worked in industry to sharpen her biochemistry skills and drug discovery knowledge. Madi joined the Perozo Lab in 2024 and is mostly interested in uncovering protein biochemistry topics, specifically those related to the structure versus function relationships using an interdisciplinary approach. She is currently working on elucidating structural and functional characteristics of Hv1 using Cryo-EM, mutagenesis, and electrophysiology. When not inside the lab walls, you will probably find Madi reading books, playing some music, or rock climbing.

Mukesh Kumar

Post-Doctoral Associate

Mukesh graduated from the SASTRA University in Thanjavur, India with a degree in Biotechnology. His first visit to the US was an internship at the University of Pittsburgh. Mukesh holds a PhD from the University of Texas at Austin in Cell and Molecular Biology, where he explored the role of PTMs of RNA Polymerase II in transcription, mentored by Dr. Yan Jessie Zhang. Mukesh joined the University of Chicago in 2023 as a Postdoctoral Associate. He is a biochemical immunologist at the Mendoza Lab and collaborates with the Perozo Lab assisting the team work with in situ expression of Prestin and TMC proteins. When he is not at the lab, Mukesh likes playing sports, video games, and biking.
Research interests: Cryo-EM; Voltage-sensing channels; Orthologous protein expression; X-ray crystallography.

Adam Feher

Post-Doctoral Fellow

Adam received a medical doctorate (M.D.) from the University of Debrecen in 2020. During his undergrad years, he joined Dr. Gyorgy Panyi’s lab as a student researcher, working on the BK channel expression in glioblastoma cells. After graduation he continued his research as a PhD student and defended his thesis titled “Examining human voltage-gated cation channels in physiological and pathophysiological conditions”. He joined the Perozo Lab in 2024 as a postdoctoral scholar. He is currently working on the structure and function of the human voltage gated proton channel (hHv1) and on its possible role in different pathophysiological conditions.

Richa Agrawal

Post-Doctoral Fellow

Richa earned a B.S. in Biotechnology and a M.S. in Biochemistry from Jiwaji University, India. While pursuing a PhD in Structural Biology at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Richa worked on characterizing both the functional and structural aspects of various industrially significant peptidases via X-ray crystallography. She collaborated with the Indian synchrotron facility, Indus-2 RRCAT to do so.
Richa joined the University of Chicago in 2021 as a post doctorate, being part of the Roux and Perozo labs. She is currently exploring the functioning of ion channels – with a particular emphasis on the C-type inactivation and gating mechanism of potassium ion channels using single particle Cryo-EM. Outside the lab, Richa enjoys painting, dancing, and reading!

Zachary Fournier

 Research Analyst

Zachary is a research analyst and maintains cnidarian and zebrafish colonies in the lab. He joined the team in 2024 to explore structural and functional connectomics in the battery-cell complex – responsible for the stinging behavior in the jellyfish tentacle. He uses high resolution microscopy and electrophysiological and computational techniques to help the lab address questions related to sensory mechanotransduction. Zachary received a B.S. in Neuroscience from Brandeis University, where he gained experience in computational neuroscience working in Eve Marder’s Lab. When not taking care of our cnidarian and zebrafish friends, Zachary likes making music, exploring the city of Chicago, and playing squash.

Zhen Tong

Graduate Student

Zhen graduated from Nankai University in China with a B.S. in Biological Sciences. During her undergraduate years, Zhen mostly researched antibody engineering. To further explore the topic, she worked at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) along with Aashish Manglik. In 2020, she joined the University of Chicago to pursue a PhD in Molecular Engineering. At the Perozo Lab, Zhen is currently seeking insights of the cnidocil complex by studying sensory mechanotransduction using Cnidarian Nematocytes as a model system. Far from the jellyfish, Zhen enjoys swimming, painting, and going to the gym.
Research interests: Cnidarians; TMC; Mechanotransduction; Antibody development.

Noelle Robert

Graduate Student

Noelle earned a B.A. in Biochemistry and Psychology from Albion College, where she worked with Dr. Craig Streu on synthesizing photoisomerizable small molecules as potential therapeutics and chemical probes. She is currently a Neurobiology graduate student at The University of Chicago and joined the Perozo Lab in 2025. While still defining her thesis project, Noelle is excited to explore the dynamic nature of protein structure and function, particularly in the presence of modulators or under extreme conditions. Her current work focuses on optimizing and refining the structure of MVP, a hyperpolarization-activated potassium channel. When Noelle is not in the lab, you can find her going to concerts, thrifting, and playing Minecraft.
