Our Story
Welcome
Phoenix Farms is happy to represent UChicago as the university’s first ever beekeeping and gardening RSO. The beekeeping branch of our program is entitled Harper Hives whereas our gardening branch is known as Avant Garden.
Each branch has respective journeypeople who spearheads each branch’s main operations. However, we like to convene as a collective under the umbrella program of Phoenix Farms and as a result, our members tend to participate in both branches. Our united front allows for innovation and creativity to emerge as the worlds of beekeeping and gardening collide.
During the 2020-2021 academic year, Phoenix Farms has really taken off, despite Covid-19 circumstances. We’re enthusiastic, eager, and beyond excited to have you learn a little more about us.Â

Our Honey Starts at HomeÂ
Our bees live in Hyde Park so if you live on the south side of Chicago, we’re your neighborhood beekeepers! Phoenix Farms holds events every academic quarter at the University of Chicago. Our bees are working alongside our students to give you the most locally sourced honey for our community, come check us out!
WHERE ARE THE BEES?

Currently, we have three hives at the First Presbyterian Church in Woodlawn.
But the real question is, where have the bees really gone?Â
Follow our research fellows as they delve into what our bees have been doing and where they have been going.
