Samuel Deutsch Professor; Deputy Dean for Research and Faculty Development

Dr. Henly (she/her/hers) is the Samuel Deutsch Professor in the University of Chicago Crown Family School of Social Work, Policy, and Practice, where she is the Deputy Dean for Research and Faculty Development. Henly is a 2018 Society for Social Work and Research Fellow, a 2016 Interdisciplinary Research Leadership Program Fellow of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and a 2016 Distinguished Fellow of the William T. Grant Foundation. She is also a longstanding member of the steering committee of the US/DHHS Administration for Children and Families’ Child Care and Early Education Policy Research Consortium.

Karlyn (she/her/hers) is a Project Manager and Research Associate in the University of Chicago Crown Family School of Social Work, Policy, and Practice, where she supports Dr. Henly’s research team by managing data collection and analysis for studies about the impact of child care policies on child care providers in Illinois.

Sarah Jiyoon Kwon, PhD

Postdoctoral Associate

Dr. Kwon (she/her/hers) joined the University of Chicago Crown Family School of Social Work, Policy, and Practice as a Postdoctoral Associate after completing her PhD in Social Work from the Columbia University School of Social Work. The overarching aim of Dr. Kwon’s research efforts is to understand family well-being and child development and their dynamic relationships with social policies.

Postdoctoral Associate

Dr. Blumenthal (she/her/hers) joined the University of Chicago Crown Family School of Social Work, Policy, and Practice as the Harold A. Richman Postdoctoral Fellow, a position which is joint with Chapin Hall. She completed her PhD in Social Work and Sociology from The University of Michigan in summer 2023. Using a mix of qualitative and quantitative approaches to answer questions related to structural determinants of child well-being, the overarching motivation of her research is to inform policy conversations on concrete supports for marginalized families.
