FAQ's about the AQM certificate

Q: What are the course requirements for the certificate program?

A: The course requirements for the certificate program are that the student (1) has fulfilled all other course requirements in his or her degree program; (2) has completed a required sequence of courses in statistical theory that provides a conceptual foundation based on probability and mathematical statistics https://voices.uchicago.edu/qrmeth/phd-certificate-in-advanced-quantitative-methods/required-course-sequence-in-statistical-theory/, (3) has successfully completed for a quality grade at least three elective courses in advanced quantitative research methods drawn from the course list at https://voices.uchicago.edu/qrmeth/elective-courses/, (4) has attended the biweekly Quantitative Methods Workshop for three quarters in accumulation and at least four times per quarter, and (5) has successfully presented a research paper at the Quantitative Methods Workshop. In addition, a minimum one course is required beyond the requirement of the student’s home discipline for the purpose of advancing their research, with guidance from an advisor on our Committee in course selection.

Q: Who can I contact to consult about what advanced methods courses to take for the certificate program?

A: Yanyan Sheng, the Senior Instructional Professor on the Committee on Quantitative Methods.

Q: If I have already completed STAT 24500 with STAT 24400 waived, do I still need to take STAT 24400 in order to get the certificate?

A: No, you don’t. In this case, you will need to take at least four elective courses in advanced quantitative methods.

Q: If I have completed all requirements for the certificate program, what do I do?

A: You need to complete a form at https://uchicago.app.box.com/s/jzooiudtifyzi2k6nj0sj16zdi7cteo0 and send a copy to Aasha Francis.

Q: Where can I find information regarding upcoming workshops?

A: Information regarding upcoming workshops can be found at https://voices.uchicago.edu/qrmeth/workshop/

Q: Do I need to register for workshops in advance?

A: If you need credit for attending the workshops (toward QMSA or the certificate program), yes, you do need to register for a zero-credit pass/fail class SOSC 47900: Quantitative Methods Workshop.

Q: Is it possible to waive the STAT 245 requirement for an elective that I have already taken?

A: We don’t recommend that you do this. If you think the elective that you’ve taken is very similar to STAT 245 in content, you can petition for the waive of the course.

Q: Is attending bi-weekly workshops the only requirement for the certificate?

A: No, you still need to complete other requirements as detailed on https://voices.uchicago.edu/qrmeth/phd-certificate-in-advanced-quantitative-methods/.
