South Side Science Festival

Interested in learning more about climate change, vaccines and pandemics, and the origins of our planet and lifeforms? Would you like to meet scientists working as researchers, medical professionals, museum curators and more to talk about diverse career paths in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medicine (STEMM)? Do not miss the opportunity to hear more on these topics from our panelists, to ask your burning questions and interact with them.  The four panels are open to all but targeted at ages 13+

Climate Change and Renewable Energy

Noon – ERC 161

Climate change is one of the greatest challenges facing society. How urgent is this problem? What possible solutions are there? Can renewable energy really replace fossil fuels? Come to hear experts from across economics, law, and the physical sciences discuss this urgent topic and what actions we should be taking now to address this issue.

Health and Society

1:30 pm – ERC 161

The use of technology in medical science has been transformative for improving diagnosis and treatment. Rapid medical response to the COVID-19 pandemic, including vaccine development, is a striking example. What does it take to design, validate, and administer vaccines? What are key considerations in the allocation of vaccines and other therapies during a public health crisis? How do societal inequities impact health disparities and access to medical care? Join experts from the University of Chicago Medical Centre and the Biological Sciences for a conversation on the intersection of medicine and technology and the real-world impact on our society, with a focus on the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Origin of Everything

3:00 pm – ERC 161

Since the beginning of human civilization, we have been asking the question of “Why and how are we here?”. Come join us for a discussion about the scientific perspectives on the answers to this question with experts on the birth of the universe, the creation of the building blocks of life, and animal and human evolution.

Career Panel and Meet the Scientist

4:00 pm – ERC 161

In this event you have the chance to get to know inspiring professionals and learn about their diverse career paths. We will have a career panel with medical professionals, quantum scientists, paleontologists, and molecular engineers. You will learn how they got to where they are and what they found most challenging and exciting on that path.
After the panel you will have to chance to interact 1-on-1 with even more scientists from all different areas of STEMM who will be happy to answer your questions on possible career pathways.
