About Us

About the Shi’i Studies Group

The Shiʿi Studies Group, established in 2010, is a forum created by University of Chicago students for an interdisciplinary discussion of current research on Shiʿism, including faculty and graduate students at the University and beyond. Each year, we hold a symposium focused around a topic central to the study of Shi’ism, in the hope of providing a space for scholars to interact with each other and demonstrate the importance of Shi’i Studies in Islamic studies more generally, as well as studies of religion and the Middle East.

2020 Shi’i Studies Symposium

The topic of the 2020 Shi’i Studies Symposium is “Walāya (Devotion) in Shi’i Islam.” The symposium will be held April 3-4, 2020, at the University of Chicago. For more information, please see the Call for Papers.
