Digital Archival Research Guide

The unprecedented events of the COVID-19 pandemic have emerged as an opportunity to utilize new methods and sources for data collection. Digital archival research in particular is emerging as an important aspect of research during the COVID-19 pandemic. UChicago Virtual Lab
Faculty and students at the University of Chicago may access licensed academic software from the campus network using vLab, a remote desktop computing environment. Available software includes MATLAB, ArcGIS, SPSS, R, Stata, and Mathematica. Begin here.

Cloud Computing
IT Services offers discounted rates for cloud computing through university-wide agreements with Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform. Learn more.

Cloud Storage

  • Google Suite: UChicago makes G Suite for Education available to all faculty, students, and staff, including: Gmail, Docs, Drive (with unlimited storage), Calendar, and Sites. Learn more.
  • UChicago Box: A cloud-based storage service that provides unlimited free, online space for storing or sharing files. Files stored on Box can be synced and accessed from desktops, mobile devices, and laptops. Log in here.
  • OneDrive: File storage and sharing, desktop syncing, and mobile Microsoft apps (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, etc.).

Survey Lab

The Survey Lab is a research center in the Biological Sciences Division. The Survey Lab provides high-quality data collection and consulting services to academic researchers, university administrators, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations. Data Use Agreements

In order to access protected data, you will need to route a Data Use Agreement through University Research Administration for institutional approval. Your department’s grants administrator (see below) can assist you with this process. For more information on DUAs, visit the URA website.
