2018 – 2019 Academic Year

The Seminar on Important Things will meet bi-weekly from 12:00 – 1:30 during the 2018 – 2019 academic year starting in Week 2 (Friday, Oct. 12th, 2018).

The focus of Autumn 2018 SOIT will be on recent journal articles published in the History, Philosophy, and Social Studies of Science.

Each week, participants will read two journal articles drawn from two of the three broad Conceptual and Historical Studies of Science disciplines (on a rotating basis). For instance, in meeting #1, we will read a recent article in the Philosophy of Science and a recent article in the History of Science. In meeting #2, we will read a recent article in the History of Science and a recent article in the Sociology or Anthropology (or related social scientific discipline) of Science -and so on.

SOIT participants from each discipline will be asked to supply the articles that we will read at each meeting. Those articles will be made available on this site.

Discussion will be led by area experts and will center on the argumentative substance of each paper rather than on extended synopses.
