Courtney Baker

Courtney R. Baker is Associate Professor of English at the University of California, Riverside and author of Humane Insight: Looking at Images of African American Suffering and Death (University of Illinois Press, 2015). Her research, writing, and teaching focus on Black film, art, and literature. Her article “Framing Blackness: Selma and the Poetics of Representation” was nominated by the journal Camera Obscura for the Society of Cinema and Media Studies’s Kovacs Prize for Best Essay in 2022. She is currently working on a book manuscript on Black labor and film formalism.
