Portia E. Cobb

Portia Cobb (b. 1954) is a multi-hyphenated media artist, a producer of short experimental documentary video & digital photo essay with expanded modalities that unite collaborative installation with plein air performance.

Her work investigates the politics of place and identity, memorializing African American Gullah Geechee Indigenous history and culture, and illustrates her interest in “Memory as Memorial.” Through her continuing documentation of urban and rural communities in America and West Africa, she draws upon these intersections “as a means of confronting forced movement and forgetting.” She has exhibited at film festivals, galleries and museums.

Portia is an associate professor in the department of film, video, animation, and new genres at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
