Ranks & Faculty Handbook
Excerpts from the Governing Documents of the University of Chicago, regarding Faculty and Other Academic Ranks:
The members of the University Faculties are classified as follows: Professor, Associate Professor, Assistant Professor, Collegiate Assistant Professor, and Instructor. Every person holding one of these titles with status as defined in Statute 11.1 shall be a member of the Faculty.
The University also makes academic appointments that are not Faculty appointments, and are for specified or unspecified length of term. No appointments under this section shall be eligible for or carry any implication of indefinite tenure.
In the Social Sciences Division, the commonly used Other Academic Appointment categories are: Associate, Visiting Scholar, Visiting with faculty rank (i.e. Visiting Professor), Postdoctoral Researcher, Lecturer, Research Associate, (Postdoctoral position at the rank of) Instructor*, and (Postdoctoral position at the rank of) Lecturer*.
*Postdoctoral positions at the rank of Instructor/Lecturer are not the same as Instructor or Lecturer appointments.
